Cheese Profile: Rich & Creamy Havarti

Havarti is a rich, creamy cheese with a buttery flavor. This semisoft cow’s milk cheese has origins in Denmark during the latter half of the 19th century and is attributed to Hanne Nielsen, a Danish cheesemaker who owned a farm named Havarthigaard. Havarti is cream to yellow in color and has very small openings or eyes throughout the cheese. There are several flavored varieties of Havarti, with dill being a perennial favorite.

Havarti is a great companion for sliced apples or pears, and delightful with a salty cracker. Beyond a cheese plate, Havarti has a variety of culinary uses, ranging from grilled cheese sandwiches and rich pasta dishes to a refreshing salad. Check out these serving suggestions and you are sure to fall in love with Havarti.
